Bangalore's Metro network is entering a major expansion phase. What began as a small 7-km corridor in 2011 has grown into a 96.1-km operational network with 83 stations, while multiple major corridors are under construction or planning. BMRCL's own 2026 Metro Parking Policy confirms that 96.1 km and 83 stations are currently operational, with Phase 2A, Phase 2B and Phase 3 under construction.

The next few years could significantly change how people travel across Bangalore. The Pink Line is moving towards opening in stages, the Blue Line will eventually connect the city with Kempegowda International Airport, and the approved Phase 3 will extend Metro connectivity across western Bangalore.

Bangalore Metro at a Glance

BMRCL's official 2026 parking policy states that the sanctioned network covering Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 2A, Phase 2B and Phase 3 totals approximately 220.20 km.

1. Purple Line: Whitefield to Challaghatta

The Purple Line is Bangalore's main east-west Metro corridor.

It connects Whitefield (Kadugodi) in East Bangalore with Challaghatta in the west, passing through major destinations including KR Puram, Baiyappanahalli, Indiranagar, MG Road, Majestic, Vijayanagar, Mysuru Road and Kengeri.

Why the Purple Line matters

The line connects two very different sides of Bangalore's economy.

On the eastern side, it serves the major technology and residential market around Whitefield. Towards the west, it connects established residential areas and major transport nodes.

The Majestic interchange connects the Purple and Green Lines, making it one of the most important Metro hubs in the city.

2. Green Line: Madavara to Silk Institute

The Green Line forms the north-south spine of Namma Metro.

The corridor has 32 stations and is approximately 33 km long.

The Green Line's northern extension to Madavara was opened in November 2024, completing the current operational north-south corridor.

3. Yellow Line: RV Road to Bommasandra

The Yellow Line is the newest operational Metro corridor in Bangalore.

It runs from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road (RV Road) to Bommasandra, serving BTM Layout, Jayadeva Hospital, Central Silk Board and the major Electronic City employment corridor.

Commercial operations began in August 2025.

The line has quickly become an important connection for Bengaluru's south-eastern technology corridor. By August 2026, the Yellow Line had carried more than 3.8 crore passengers in its first year, with daily ridership rising to around 1.2 lakh by July 2026.

Why the Yellow Line is important for real estate

BMRCL has also planned an elevated pedestrian connection between the Yellow and upcoming Blue Line stations at Silk Board. The proposed walkway is around 250 metres long and includes a travelator.

Upcoming Bangalore Metro Lines

The next stage of Bangalore's Metro expansion is even more significant.

Two major under-construction corridors — the Pink Line and Blue Line — are expected to add substantial connectivity, although their opening dates have been revised several times.

4. Pink Line: Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara

The Pink Line is one of Bangalore's most technically important Metro projects because it includes both elevated and underground sections.

The full corridor connects Kalena Agrahara in South Bangalore with Nagawara in North Bangalore, passing through Dairy Circle, Adugodi, Langford Town, Shivajinagar and Cantonment-side areas.

The corridor is approximately 21 km, with a substantial underground section.

First section: Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere

The elevated section is approximately 7 km long and includes six stations.

The section was initially expected to open earlier in 2026, but statutory approvals pushed the timeline.

As of August 23, 2026, BMRCL said the elevated section was likely to open in the first week of September 2026, subject to Railway Board and safety clearances.

Second section: Tavarekere/Dairy Circle to Nagawara

The underground section is approximately 13.76 km.

The latest government-linked timeline discussed by the Bengaluru Development Minister targets the underground section for mid-2027, although earlier schedules had targeted March 2027.

The Blue Line is arguably the most important upcoming Metro project for Bangalore's IT and airport connectivity.

The Union Cabinet approved the combined 58.19-km project in 2021 at a completion cost of ₹14,788.101 crore. Phase 2A covers Central Silk Board to KR Puram, while Phase 2B extends from KR Puram towards Kempegowda International Airport via Hebbal.

Phase 2A: Central Silk Board to KR Puram

This is the approximately 19.75-km Outer Ring Road section.

It will connect some of Bangalore's busiest technology and employment locations.

Phase 2B: KR Puram to Airport

The second portion will connect KR Puram through Hebbal and North Bangalore to Kempegowda International Airport.

This is the section that could fundamentally change airport connectivity.

In August 2026, Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced a revised commissioning plan:

• Central Silk Board–KR Puram: targeted for mid-2027
• Hebbal–KIA: targeted for September 2027
• KR Puram–Hebbal: targeted between December 2027 and March 2028
• Entire 58-km Blue Line: targeted for March 2028

The revised timeline is important because previous announcements had targeted completion by the end of 2027.

Why the Blue Line matters for property markets

Once the Pink and Blue Lines become operational, Bangalore's Metro map will change again with Phase 3.

The Union Cabinet approved Phase 3 in August 2024.

The project consists of 44.65 km and 31 stations, with a total approved completion cost of ₹15,611 crore.

It consists of two corridors.

Orange Line: JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura

The first corridor is approximately 32.15 km long.

It will run through the western side of Bangalore, broadly along the western Outer Ring Road.

Expected completion

The original government approval indicated 2029 as the operational target.

However, the project has faced design and execution issues, including debate over the extent of the proposed double-decker structure. Recent reporting indicates that the double-decker component may be reduced in some stretches.

Therefore, 2029 should be treated as the approved target, not a guaranteed opening date.

Grey Line: Hosahalli to Kadabagere

The second Phase 3 corridor is approximately 12.50 km long.

It will run along Magadi Road from Hosahalli to Kadabagere.

What Comes After Phase 3?

Bangalore's Metro story does not end with Phase 3.

The city is also working on additional corridors, but these should not be confused with fully sanctioned, under-construction Metro lines.

Phase 3A: Hebbal to Sarjapur

The proposed Hebbal–Sarjapur Metro corridor is one of the most closely watched future projects because it would connect North Bangalore to the rapidly growing South-East corridor.

The project has been under discussion as Phase 3A, but it should currently be treated differently from the Union Cabinet-approved Phase 3 corridors.

In 2026, the Karnataka government was seeking an early central approval for Phase 3A, with the estimated project cost among the major mobility proposals awaiting clearance.

Recent reporting also indicates that BMRCL has modified the proposal as part of the process of seeking central approval.

If eventually approved and built, it could connect:

Sarjapur → HSR/Agara → Bellandur-side corridor → Hebbal

Proposed Metro Extensions

Bangalore's long-term Metro planning also includes possible extensions towards areas such as:

The Karnataka government has indicated that DPRs were being prepared for some of these extensions, but DPR preparation is not the same as final approval or construction commencement.
